The direct action the moon has on the earth, through the ebb and flow of tides is what science has taught us and its cycles are poured over by astronomers and astrologists alike. Is the reason why the moon has such a strange effect on us that, like the tides, are bodies are subject to the same ebbs and flows?
Perhaps that happens, but I personally believe that the Moon is far more mysterious than that! Science and the knowledge gained from gazing through a telescope, don't explain why the moon is so powerfully reflected in archetypal symbolism. The moon is rich with imagery of the feminine - the receptive moon, absorbing and reflecting the light of the sun, her lover. But I would encourage you to look a little more closely at the moon, listen that little bit more intently - you'll begin to realize that all that poetry and music and art isn't just an expression of archetypal symbolism.
I see the moon as a sentient being with her own soul and voice, someone who speaks directly to us. In our rich and wonderful universe the moon is our friend, a very powerful woman, who watches over our world constantly and keeps us safe. She has a soft and comforting light that goes into our hearts and speaks to us. She has a song too that can awaken that part of our soul, our spirit, that needs healing. We can be revitalised for each day. The moon can reassure and tell us that all will somehow be right with the world.
Moonlight can pick out things that cannot be seen any other way. She has a softness that kindles a sort of knowing that reaches far beyond conceptual thought. She can inspire in that part of our mind where our dreams are born bringing forth new possibilities, new inventions. The light of the moon can creep into all the corners of our consciousness, our "heart-mind", gently and persistantly, flowing deeper into our dreams so we become ready to embrace and awareness to fullfillment in our conscious thoughts. Repetative dreams are the child of the moon mother who, with gentleness but persistance, gives us all the knowledge we willneed. The moon will calm the fear, ease the disturbing and smooth out all the bumps and roughness till they can be dissolved down into our psyches.
The moon has moods, but not quite like a woman! Her voice changes its quality with each phase. She is very quiet, even inward looking when in her 'new moon' phase. And she walks confidently through her phases until she emerges, abundant and over flowing at 'Full Moon'. This is when her heart is given full voice, when she opens herself fully to the sun, and offers that light, golden and warm and abundant, to all of us here on the earth. Somehow, even when it is cloudy, her voice is still there. She peaks out from behind scattered cloud, and reminds us that light penetrates even the darkest night. And then, just as nature understands in autumn, she relaxes back to her quieter self, as she wanes again through her diminishing phases. This isn't a sad time for her, but a peaceful time - she knows that she will soon open again in the right time.
The moon helps us to embrace the mystery of our universe, it is her prime function. She reminds us in song of the bits of our stories that come from the past. She creates the passage, the route map to our past and the knowledge and wisdom we found there in our past lives and the accumulation of our shared experiences. She forgets nothing, she assists us to recall the depth of our soul - she is the communicator of hope.
Is it any wonder that she has inspired so many and been honored so deeply throughout the human story?
The moonmoon, it would appear, has inspiredinspired artists and philosophers through the centuries, and in every culture. This article, by Cathy Coxinspired, delves deep into the long tradition of moon worshipworship.
